India Rejects UN Rights Office Remarks on Protests as Unacceptable Interference

The Ministry of External Affairs rejected remarks by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) regarding demonstrations in New Delhi on Oct. 11, 2026.
The ministry termed the agency's concerns unwarranted and an unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of India.
The ministry stated India's constitutional right to peaceful assembly is safeguarded by robust institutions, an independent judiciary, and a free media.
The statement maintained that Indian citizens exercise this right subject to public order and safety, with law enforcement authorities acting strictly in accordance with the law and courts available for grievances.
The ministry also noted the OHCHR demonstrates extreme selectivity and double standards by ignoring violent responses to protests in India's neighborhood and law enforcement actions in its own vicinity.
For Indian Americans tracking diplomatic policy, New Delhi firmly dismissed external scrutiny from international bodies over domestic assemblies.
