Sri Lanka suffers nationwide blackout after grid trips on Oct 17

Sri Lanka suffered a nationwide electricity blackout on Saturday, October 17, 2026, after the national grid tripped.

The country was without power for over two hours.

Officials suspect excess solar power generation may have caused the breakdown.

Authorities stated that they hoped to restore supplies "stage by stage."
